PROJECT TO SAVE MACEDONIAN STUDIES AT MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY
I write to inform you about the Macedonian studies program, part of the Department of European Languages at Macquarie University. Macquarie University is one of the few universities in the world where the Macedonian language, culture and literature are taught. Since 1984 it has educated hundreds of students from all over Australia in the Macedonian language and literature.
The program is a priceless ambassador for our culture and a resource we cannot afford to lose. It is open to anyone who wishes to study Macedonian, not just university students. No prior knowledge is required. You can study from anywhere in Australia. Many people over the years, including non-Macedonians, have used the course to either learn Macedonian or improve their language skills.
The Macedonian Studies Foundation was established in 1988 to support Macedonian studies at Macquarie University at a time when Macedonian studies was threatened with closure, but thanks to the generosity of the Macedonian community at that time, a significant sum was raised. Unfortunately for many years now, both government and university funding for the course have been withdrawn. The Foundation stepped in to finance the program, otherwise it would have been cut many years ago.
Of course the Foundation in turn looks to the Macedonian community to raise funds for the program’s existence. Currently, the Foundation must contribute approximately $18,000 annually to Macquarie University to keep the course alive. It is a small price to pay for a program that guarantees the survival of our cultural identity in Australia and is a vital resource for the Macedonian community and its future generations. Unfortunately, it is a target we are not currently meeting. Although our student numbers are increasing, our financial position is precarious.
We urgently need to save this valuable resource, before it disappears. The Foundation appeals to you to support this worthwhile cause. Nothing would please the negators of our community here more than if Macedonian studies quietly disappeared. Nothing would be more tragic for our future generations if they were denied the opportunity of learning their mother tongue.
Please visit www.eurolang.mq.edu.au for more information about the course. If you know someone who might be interested in studying Macedonian, tell them about the program.
Our donation form can be accessed at www.eurolang.mq.edu.au/macedonian/doc/5000_patriots.pdf
The Foundation is a registered charity and all donations over $2 are tax deductible. Cheques should be made payable to “Macedonian Studies Foundation”. You will be sent a receipt. Please call me on 0404 91 00 96 to discuss further how you can assist.
